Steve Jobs Dies: Apple Chief Innovated Personal Computer, Created iPad, iPod, iPhone

Steve Jobs, the mastermind behind Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes, has died, Apple said. Jobs was 56.

Jobs died "peacefully," surrounded by family members, his family said in a statement.

Neither Jobs' family nor Apple revealed where he died or from what cause, though in recent years Jobs had fought a form of pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant.

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," read a statement by Apple's board of directors. "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

As Jobs' death was announced, the homepage of Apple's website switched to a full-page image of Jobs with the text, "Steve Jobs 1955-2011."

Clicking on the image revealed additional text that was credited to current Apple CEO Tim Cook in a separate memo to Apple employees.

"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being," the text read. "Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Reaction to Jobs' death came from far and wide -- even from the White House.

"Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs," President Obama said in a written statement. "Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it."

Jobs co-founded Apple Computer in 1976 and, with his childhood friend Steve Wozniak, marketed what was considered the world's first personal computer, the Apple II.

Shortly after learning of Jobs' death, Wozniak told ABC News, "I'm shocked and disturbed."

Later, on ABC News' "Nightline," he said it was hard to imagine, in some ways, how the world would move forward without Jobs.

"You get shocked when people you know die," Wozniak said. "And this was closer to when John Lennon died, or JFK or Martin Luther King."

Industry watchers called Jobs a master innovator -- perhaps on a par with Thomas Edison -- changing the worlds of computing, recorded music and communications.

I have been to a lot of places but the most beautiful one was Almeria. I visited Almería five years ago (in July 2005). I don’t know if I’m going back, but I would like to do it in the future.On the one hand, the weather was fantastic, it was sunny all the time, lots of people go there because Almería is a typical summer destination. Furthermore the hotel was very good, it had all you can need and it was close to the beach, approximately ten minutes on foot. When I visited Almería I found a lot of interesting things, for example, that people are very friendly and hilarious, but from my point of view, the best thing of my trip was the food, because fish is very well cooked there.On the other hand, although the hotel was fantastic, I didn’t like the breakfast. Moreover the transport was a small problem for me because I went by car and it took me eight hours to arrive in Almería, so when I got there I felt very tired.In short, the experience was fantastic because I had a great summer with my family, visited amazing places, walked around wonderful beaches, and if it was up to me I would return

April Fools' Day is celebrated in different countries around the world on April 1 every year. Sometimes referred to as All Fools' Day, April 1 is not a national holiday, but is widely recognized and celebrated as a day when many people play all kinds of jokes and foolishness. The day is marked by the commission of good-humoured or otherwise funny jokes, hoaxes, and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, teachers, neighbors, work associates, etc.

The earliest recorded association between April 1 and foolishness can be found in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (1392). Many writers suggest that the restoration of January 1 as New Year's Day in the 16th century was responsible for the creation of the holiday, but this theory does not explain earlier references.

Saint Patrick's Day, March 17, is an annual celebration of the patron saint of Ireland. It is a national holiday in Ireland, and millions of Irish people all over the world where there are Irish communities celebrate. Celebrations are based on all things Irish and the colour green. City authorities in Chicago even dye the city’s river green for this day. Many people wear green clothes, eat Irish food and drink the Irish drink Guinness, which many bars also try and dye green. There are also traditional St Patrick’s Day parades. The one in Dublin is spread over five days and attracts half a million people. The New York parade is the largest, with two million spectators. Many people with no Irish connections celebrate and declare themselves Irish for a day.

Saint Patrick was a Christian missionary. Some scholars say he was born in England, while others believe he was Italian. Most agree he lived in the fifth century. When he was sixteen, he was captured and taken as a slave to Ireland. He lived as a slave for six years before escaping. He joined the church to train as a priest and became a missionary in the north and west of Ireland. Legend has it that Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. There are many other legends about Patrick that have cemented him as a key part of Irish culture. March 17 is believed to be the date of his death. Unlike other saints, Patrick was never canonized by a Pope, although most Christian churches list him as a “Saint in Heaven”.

All the people started to get confused and crazy and when they were about to hit me and the Scotsman the third gadget started to bleep.

Everybody went to the third gadget, and we all thought that the three gadgets had something in common, so we linked together the three parts. Suddenly, a holographic image appeared from the device.

The men who appeared from the holographic image told all of us that we were actually guinea-pigs of a behavior experiment. The men also told us that we also have a chip implemented under our skin. We were being wwatched and controlled from a satellite.

The men also told us that this story was aimed at studying us. We needed to get to a safe place and we also had to be organized to get there. On the way, theree would be some clues and some food and drink.

III Concurso fotográfico “Pasaba por ahí”

1. Objetivo del concurso: fomentar entre los alumnos el intercambio de experiencias a través de sus viajes y el conocimiento de diferentes culturas.

2. Participantes: todos los alumnos matriculados en la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Navalmoral de la Mata en el presente curso escolar 2010-2011.

3. Pautas: cada participante podrá mandar un máximo de tres fotografías realizadas en sus viajes por España o el extranjero, que serán originales e inéditas. El alumno debe ser reconocible en la fotografía. Cada fotografía será acompañada por una frase (en castellano o en cualquiera de las lenguas impartidas en la EOI) que transmita la experiencia que desea compartir. El texto debe enviarse aparte de la foto, no integrado en ella.

4. Presentación: fotografía digital, sin comprimir. No se admitirán fotografías analógicas escaneadas. Cada fotografía se enviará por correo electrónico a la siguiente cuenta: eoinavalmoralconcursos@gmail.com El mensaje debe incluir el nombre y apellidos del concursante, así como el idioma y nivel que cursa.

5. Plazo de presentación: desde el 25 de febrero hasta el 29 de abril (ambos inclusive).

6. Criterio de valoración: se tendrá en cuenta la originalidad en la forma de captar y transmitir el espíritu viajero de los participantes.

7. Sistema de votación: las votaciones se realizarán en las aulas de la escuela.

8. Plazo de votación: días 4 (grupos de lunes y miércoles) y 5 (grupos de martes y jueves) de mayo

9. Premios:

1º premio: dos noches de hotel

2º premio: una noche de hotel

Shortly afterwards, as we were arguing, a tiny plane appeared with the producer. He was holding a megaphone and then suddenly he said: “Don't go crazy, this is also a stage of the programme, so please stop arguing and listen carefully. We've set down a plane deep within the jungle and you must find out where it is. To help you with this task, you can use the gadgets you collected in the plane before. As you can see, they've been bleeping for a while. When two of the gadgets are near, they start bleeping and the higher they bleep, the closer you're of the plane. Now, we'll explain the rules of this stage:

First, you'll be divided in two groups of 3 people. Each group will have a gadget, and you'll need to find the other one so you can find the plane later. You'll get an envelope with a clue inside it in order to help you to find the gadget. The clue will tell you a location of the island, and when you arrive there you'll have to pass a test to get the second clue. As you know, there's only one gadget left, so the fastest group will be the one who'll get it first. Once one time has reached the gadget, the other time will have to get a gadget from them, anyway they want (that means you can even fight, as long as you don't kill each other). The second and last rule is that, the team which loses the game will have to stay in this island for a month surviving all by themselves as a punishment. So, that's all, you can start from... now!

Everybody was shocked at these words but, maybe for a survival instinct that had rised inside me since I fell from the plane, I started to run with the people of my team as fast as I could and, so on, we reached the first test. It consisted in walking on a woods without losing the balance. We could handle to do it in two minutes and then we rushed to the next test. This test was even harder than the last one, because you needed to dive into mud to find the clue and, at the same time, within the mud there were poisonous spiders and snakes. I was slightly scared a the beginning, but just the idea of spending a month in this living hell cheered me up to do it, and then I made out to find the clue. So we headed to the last test and actually, this one was the easiest one. We just needed to use some ropes to jump and get to a rock. We easily did it and then started running to the place where the gadget was. When we arrived the place where the gadget was supòssed to be, we heard some sort of engine noise and then, we saw a plane flying in the sky above us, leaving the island. Shortly after, the producer said that the other team had won the game, and that we'd have to stay in the island.

“What does this mean? Is he serious?” those were the questions I had in that precise moment. My partners started sounding him out with questions frantically, but there was no answer. The plane had already left.

Punxsutawney Phil sees no shadow, predicts early spring!!

Prophetic groundhog has seen his shadow 98 times, hasn't seen it 16 times since 1887

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. — To the relief of the winter-weary, the world's most famous groundhog is predicting an early spring.

Punxsutawney Phil emerged around dawn on Groundhog Day on Wednesday to make his 125th annual weather forecast in front of thousands who braved muddy, icy conditions. Phil's handlers revealed that Pennsylvania's prophetic rodent was rooting for the Steelers in this Sunday's Super Bowl and that he had not seen his shadow.

Phil's handlers, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle, concoct the forecasts. Several thousand revelers gathered in the pre-dawn hours on a small hill called Gobbler's Knob to hear the prediction.

Before Wednesday, Phil had seen his shadow 98 times and hadn't seen it 15 times since 1887. There are no records for the remaining years, though the group has never failed to issue a forecast.

The tradition traces its origins to a German superstition.

At that moment, everybody heard a very violent thunder coming from the sky. The impact was amazing and the earth trembled strongly. It was a meteor! A very big gray stone landed in the middle of the island. Immediately, everything was set on fire. The contestants began to scream in panic. They couldn't believe their eyes. That wasn't all. Suddenly a bright light flashed from the stone (that was broken in two pieces) and a green liquid flowed slowly from inside that thing that looked like a spaceship. A funny alien came out from the meteor. It hugged the blonde girl. Her hair became blue and her cheeks blushed.
The Scotsman set the camera on the floor and the alien, as if it was a couch potato, caught it and started watching cartoons on it.
The rest of the contestants found the opportunity to escape to the middle of the jungle, except the blonde girl who had joined the alien.
Antonio Resines (Foxx Mulder) wole up in his home. He could figure out that everything had been a terrifying nightmare if this kind man.

I strove for explaining to the others that I wasn’t a betrayer. Suddenly, I saw a 6^th channel sticker in the blonde woman’s bag. It was on a folder that contained some pieces of paper. I quickly grabbed the folder and I opened it. “It’s the the blonde woman who works for the other channel. She’s infiltrated!”, I shouted. “She’s got a plan to spoil our programme. It’s all written down here!”.

The Scotsman picked up the plan and read that one of the steps consisted of crashing the plane. Everybody stared at her completely puzzled and asked her why she did it. “You could have killed us!”, shouted the Americans. That was too polite for me, so I jumped towards her and the other contestants separated us so that she could explain herself. “I need the money!”, she cried, “...and 6^th channel offered me a lot!” This reason wasn’t big enough for us to act this way, so we tied her to a palm tree in the middle of the jungle and we started to walk in order to find some help. Finally, we could get to a village where we could phone our channel and be rescued!

Suddenly I realized that everybody was staring at me and closing the circle around me. I had to react quickly. The circle was getting closer.

‘I MUST ESCAPE! I thought… The only way to do it was to quickly slip through between the Blonde Girl and the Scotsman, so I pushed her and ran away.

In just a few minutes I found my own end: ahead of me was a steep ravine. Suddenly I felt a hand strongly grabbing my shoulder and I brushed it off. It was the Scotsman and then I saw the pilot, too, so I guessed the others had disappeared. I fought them both but then the Scotsman accidentally pushed the pilot towards the ravine. ‘What have I done? It’s your fault!’ he exclaimed looking at me. And then he jumped, too.

THEY ARE ALL DEAD!

What now: Ending 3

At first I felt frightened and hopeless; I was really worried because my life was at risk. Definitively: we’re near to die!

Later, when I realized they were all playing a role I got furious. All I could think of was killing someone… I promised myself to never to the same. I knew now it had all been a joke, the whole story was part Jack’s revenge for sending him to Punk'd *a month before.

I learned my lesson.

The island where we had stayed ended up not being real. All the time we had spent on the show we were on a stage. The set was so real that we found it difficult to believe the truth. At that moment the curtains went up and we saw the audience watching the show.

It turned out that the pilot was right. We found out that the two gadgets were part of a remote control, and somebody was flying the plane...
We decided to get away from the crashed plane because we were terrified. Somebody was trying to control us!
So we just started to walk, and we kept on walking for hours. But the further we tried to get from the plane, the closer we were, as if somebody was trying to tell us we should be nearby: we always ended where the plane was set.
All of a sudden, a strange voice sounded over us...

"Peter, turn off the computer. It's lunchtime"
"OK mom, I'm coming"

What now? Nothing! It's the end!

MY FAVOURITE PLACE FOR HOLIDAYS

The best place I’ve recently visited is Conil de la Frontera, in Cádiz (Spain).

It is not an exotic village, it is not far from Extremadura and it is not a luxurious place. So, why do I love Conil? The answer is easy.

Conil isn’t a big city and you can park the car when you arrive and leave it there all the time. That is a good thing, because you don’t waste a lot of time driving from a place to another.

Also, restaurants are in the village center and the food is very good. The fish is cooler than the meat, especially the sardines.

Its beach is clean, its water is transparent and it has an excellent temperature.

At night, there are many bars and pubs where you can go for a drink. However, there are other possibilities, for example, going for a walk around the village, to the beach or visiting some shops in the street.

It is a quiet place, without special problems about terrorism or crime and where you have a lot of landscapes to see, enjoy them and stay calm in a nice environment.

Get ready for The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards!

Hello everybody! Those of you who, just like myself, are fans of the American Entertainment Industry, have a very important date this coming Sunday: The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards Ceremony, where American Film and Television receive recognition by the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association). These awards are given in both domestic and foreign categories.

The Golden Globe Awards are always followed by the Oscars, which is another favourite time of the year for me...

Among this year's nominations, in the Best Foreign Language Film category, we can find the Mexican-Spanish Film Biutiful, a love story between a father and his children, from the Oscar Winning Actor & Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

Anyway, just for you, I found this Trivia information in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Official Webpage and I thought I would share it with my favourite people, our students.

The Golden Globes is the only awards show today that combines the intimacy and spontaneity of a party for several hundred of film and TV's finest with the drama and anticipation of a live, worldwide-televised event.

Stars, journalists and guests freely mingle during the telecast with no designated 'seat-fillers,' lending the show an air of informality and casual elegance where anything can happen — and most often does. Winners good-naturedly moon the crowd (Jack Nicholson in 1999), have to be rousted out of the bathroom (Christine Lahti in 1998), or give their award away (Ving Rhames giving his statuette to his idol Jack Lemmon in 1998). But amid all the frivolity and good times, the awards have steadily grown in stature from their humble inception, today commanding a worldwide television audience of 250.000.000.

Founded in October 1943 by eight foreign journalists, the organization was originally called the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association. The first awards ceremony was held during a luncheon at 20th Century Fox, where the winners in five categories—Best Motion Picture, Best Actor and Actress, and Best supporting Actor and Actress—received scrolls, with "The Song of Bernadette" winning the top prize. The next year the ceremony was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, but the fledgling group's funds were so tight that Joan Bennett's gardener was tapped to supply the flowers for the tables. The actual Golden Globe award came about in 1946, when association president Marina Cisternas came up with the idea of using a statuette of a "golden globe" with a filmstrip circling it. The Golden Globes were always given out by journalists in the association up until 1958, when Rat Packers Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. stormed the stage, with whiskeys and cigarettes in tow, and took over the show, to the delight of the audience. They repeated their performance the next year (this time at the request of the HFPA) and since then, the stars have reigned supreme at the Globes.
The first telecasts of the Globes were from 1958-1963 but were only aired locally in L.A.
The first national telecasts of the awards were during a special segment on "The Andy Williams Show" in 1964 and 1965.
Most Globes won by a film: five, shared by five winners: "Doctor Zhivago"(1966), "Love Story" (1971), "The Godfather" (1973), "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1976), and "A Star is Born" (1977).
Perfect records: "Doctor Zhivago", "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", and "A Star is Born" all received five nominations and won five Globes.
"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is the only film to win the Globe in all five major categories (Best Motion Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, Screenplay).
Most nominations by a film: nine for "Nashville" (1976) -- ironically the film only won one Globe, for the Best Song "I'm Easy" by Keith Carradine. Three other films -- "Cabaret" (1973), "Bugsy" (1992), and "Titanic" (1998) -- tied for second with eight nominations apiece. All won Best Motion Picture in their respective categories.
Biggest shutouts: "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1967) and "The Godfather, Part III" (1991) each received seven nominations but no Globes.
Most individual Globes: seven went to Meryl Streep, followed by six to Jack Nicholson, five each to Francis Ford Coppola, Shirley MacLaine, Rosalind Russell, and Oliver Stone.
Rosalind Russell won all five Golden Globes she was nominated for but never won an Oscar.
Most individual nominations: Meryl Streep 25, Jack Lemmon 22.
Only three-way tie: Jodie Foster ("The Accused"), Shirley MacLaine ("Madame Sousatzka"), and Sigourney Weaver ("Gorillas in the Mist") for Best Actress in 1989.
Only winners to receive two acting Globes in the same year: Sigourney Weaver won Best Actress for "Gorillas in the Mist" and Best Supporting Actress for "Working Girl" in 1989; Joan Plowright won Best Supporting Actress for "Enchanted April" and "Stalin" in 1993 and Kate Winslet won Best Actress for "Revolutionary Road" 2009 and Best Supporting Actress for "The Reader" in 2009.
Most nominations in one year: Jamie Foxx, 2005. Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, "Ray"; Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture – Drama, "Collateral"; Best Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, "Redemption".
Youngest winner: Ricky Schroeder was nine years old when he won the Globe for Best New Star of the Year in 1980 for "The Champ".
Oldest winners: 80-year-old Jessica Tandy won Best Actress for "Driving Miss Daisy" in 1990, and 76-year-old Henry Fonda won Best Actor for "On Golden Pond" in 1982.
Winners who refused the Globe: The producers of "Z" refused the Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 1970 because they wanted the film included in the main Best Motion Picture category. Marlon Brando refused his Best Actor Globe for "The Godfather" in 1973 to protest U.S. "imperialism and racism". He similarly didn't accept his Oscar statuette.

I did my best to look surprised when I took out the gadget of my pocket. -“I can’t remember anything!What’s this?” I said- While everybody was waiting for a convincing explanation, we heard another bleep coming from the Scotsman’s pocket. Both gadgets were bleeping louder and louder as they were coming closer. One of the American contestants, who looked really upset, asked me “Why did you hide it?”. Right afterwards, the blonde woman stood up, came close to me and, staring at my face, she said “I know you...Don’t you work for 6^th channel??They always try to spoil our programmes!! You betrayed us!!”

People were shocked and they all started to doubt me.

“I’m sure this accident is your fault !!” said the blonde woman.

“I was in the toilet!! How could it be???” I replied

“And what were you doing in the toilet for such a long time?” enquired the other American.

All of a sudden, the pilot stated “Yeah!The plane went out of control.....it was as if someone else was flying it!”

Before we start writing corny Christmas texts, with our wishes of love and happiness for all mankind, here's something that could help you smile through these last working days of the year.

Students in 2NA have been discussing the issue of discrimination. While looking for videos on the subject, I came across this little work of art that I wanted to share with you.

For TV and movie lovers, I'll just say that you can't miss Jack Black, John C Reilly or Neil Patrick Harris here.

Just to give you context: Proposition 8 was voted in California in 2008, and stated that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California". This video was made before the actual voting took place, in an attempt to raise awareness of the issue.

What Now? Episode VI

The plane had crashed in the woods and split in two, flames and a thick black smoke coming out of it.
At first I thought all this was a cruel practical joke, but when I saw everybody's shocked faces I realised it was for real. 'Oh, Boy, do I regret getting in this stupid show in the first place...' I thought while the Scotsman put a bandage on my head.
By then, The Blonde Girl was screaming: 'OH, MY GOD! WE ARE LOST! WE ARE GOING TO DIE! How will we EVER reach the producers of the tv show?
'Oh, for goodness sake, STOP!!!!' cried the Scotsman. 'I need to concentrate!'
Suddenly we all heard a bleep. While everybody stared at me I remembered the gadget in my pocket...

What now? (Episode V)

I still couldn’t believe my eyes. I had walked out of the toilet when I realized part of the floor had disappeared. It was no longer there. To my amazement, people were simply falling out of the plane. Then I fainted.

I looked around. We were in the jungle. The others sat in a circle around me. The Scotsman was holding a first-aid kit, while the blonde girl was running around frantically.

"Something must have gone wrong" I thought

What now? (Chapter IV)

It was the moment to get out. I practised my best smile in front of the mirror and I turned round to the door. When I tried to open it..."This can't be true!". The door was locked!!

I shouted and hit the door as much as I could but there was no response. I didn't know what to do. Behind the door, it seemed as if they were having a party. The blond girl on TV was announcing the Scottish man had found one of the missing gadgets. They were all so excited that no one could imagine I was there.

I was wondering for a while what to do and, suddenly, an idea crossed my mind: "Why not using the metal gadget I had to unlock the door?"... and it worked!Unfortunately, what I found when I managed to leave the toilet was such a shock to me, that I decided to hide the gadget in my pocket.

Right after that, I started to feel as if I were breaking out in a cold sweat, my eyes were blurring and...

The next thing I remember is the pilot slapping my face to wake me up.

WHAT NOW? EPISODE III

As I got into the plane I realised we were moving... The plane was taking off!! I started to feel sick and terrified.

Suddenly, a deep velvet voice startled us. The blonde girl appeared on a screen and told us that we only had two hours to find the hidden parts of the plane or we would run out of fuel.

About to throw up, I ran to the toilet. While I was washing my face, I saw something out of the corner of my eye: a sort of metal gadget which was... one of the missing parts!. Phew!!!! My heart was about to explode with pride and relief... I could picture in my mind the audience roaring and clapping at my triumph.

Every cloud has a silver lining...

What now? (Episode II)

The door opened and I noticed everybody had stopped talking. Just then, a blonde girl entered the room. She was ridiculously beautiful: long legs, long hair, low cleavage... you name it.
Things started to happen fast. I was blinded by a spotlight while she started speaking to a camera that was hidden behind the light. “Welcome to this wild, addictive, brand-new show” she said. I couldn't quite understand her words after that. I felt lost. I could only pick a few things here and there.

But my friends were already moving. Apparently, we had to start by finding 3 parts that were missing from the plane, so I followed them. How did I get into this?
